General information about CVO and COC

A Certificate of Conformity (COC), also known as a Certificate of Conformity (CoC), is an official document that proves that a vehicle complies with the European type approval. This document is required for import, export and registration of vehicles within the EU.

A COC document (Certificate of Conformity) contains all technical and legal information about a vehicle and confirms that it complies with EU directives. It is often used for:

  • Registering an imported car.
  • The re-registration of a vehicle after loss of documents.
  • Demonstrating the vehicle's environmental and safety standards.

Yes, in most cases a COC document required for the import or export of a vehicle within the EU. Without this document, a vehicle may not be registered with the RDW or another European inspection body.

The CVO en COC mean the same thing. CVO (Certificate of Conformity) is the Dutch term, while COC (Certificate of Conformity) the international term is. Both documents confirm that a vehicle complies with EU legislation.

How can you check the European Type Approval Number of a vehicle?

The European Type Approval Number is displayed on a sticker or nameplate in the driver's side door of most vehicles. The number always starts with the letter 'e' followed by a fixed numerical country code. Type Approval Numbers also consist of specific codes, each of which represents a directive or inspection requirement. The components are separated by an asterisk (*).

Why doesn't my vehicle have a European Type Approval Number?

Before a car can be driven on the road in Europe, the manufacturer must demonstrate that it complies with all relevant legislation. Various tests must also be successfully passed. A vehicle without a European Type Approval Number does not meet the requirements set by the European Commission. Without EC Type Approval, a vehicle cannot and may not be introduced on the European market.

You can check this by contacting the manufacturer or importer of your vehicle. If you buy a second-hand car, you can ask the previous owner if the COC document is present.
